After testing a number of different natural-gas engine oils, Öresundskraft came to the conclusion that SENTRON CG 40 is the best oil for their Jenbacher engines.
Öresundskraft is the fourth-largest electrical power selling company in Sweden. The company produces district heating, district cooling and electricity. It also supplies natural gas and telecommunications within the city of Helsingborg.
About 370 people are employed at Öresundskraft, which is located in Helsingborg, Sweden, about 50 kilometres north of Copenhagen, Denmark.
Öresundskraft Produktion AB, the production company of Öresundskraft, is involved in a number of technically challenging activities. The main power generation plant is a pulverized boiler; there is also a heat pump, two bio gas-fired engines, a number of gas- and oil-fired hot water boilers, and a natural gas-fired combined cycle gas turbine followed by a Heat Recovery Steam Generator that supplies steam to a steam turbine island.
“Our combined cycle gas turbine/steam turbine, two hot water boilers and two small motors with affixed electric generators all use gas from the Helsingborg landfill,” says Anders Ottosson, Maintenance Manager, Öresundskraft.
Both of the small motors used in the biogas operation are General Electric Jenbacher units; one is a Jenbacher JW216.GS, the other a Jenbacher JW316.GS. They each run around 8,000 hours a year, and operate 20,000 hours between engine overhauls. A major overhaul is performed around every 40,000 hours, at which point the old motor is exchanged with a renovated motor and Jenbacher buys back the used motor.
The Challenge
The gas produced at the landfill is quite dirty and full of residue; it is unrefined. Therefore, Öresundskraft requires a natural gas engine oil (NGEO) that can handle the high particulate load that is deposited in the oiling system while consuming unrefined gas.
Öresundskraft is part of a buying group that arranges purchase contracts for various products. This buying group makes contracts with petroleum suppliers so that members can purchase the best products from suppliers at corporate rates. They are therefore very experienced in evaluating and identifying the most appropriate products for their various applications.
The Trial
“Historically, we’ve tried a number of different engine oils,” explains Ottosson. “Originally, we were using SENTRON, but because of what appeared to be a better discounted contract price of a competitive product, we switched to a different brand of oil. However, we were soon experiencing short service intervals and high Total Acid Number (TAN) readings after the switch. It became obvious that amongst the oils we tried, SENTRON is the best.”
“We take oil samples and check the quality of the oil in our on-site laboratory on a regular basis. Through our testing, we came to the conclusion that SENTRON CG 40 is the best oil in this application for our Jenbacher engines, and it is lasting longer than any other product tested. In other words, it has the longest drain duration. There is less oxidation with SENTRON, it’s more tolerant to the shifting quality of the biogas and it keeps engine parts clean.”
SENTRON CG 40 is a medium ash, premium performance NGEO. It is formulated specifically for 4-stroke cycle gas engines running in severe service operations.

“We contacted our distributor, Canadian Oil, and have been using SENTRON CG 40 for about two years now. It has about 50 percent longer lifetime. The other types of oil that we tried only lasted roughly 500 hours in one engine and 1,000 hours in the second unit. With SENTRON, we change oil on one of the Jenbacher units every 700 to 800 hours, and on the other engine every 1,200 to 1,400 hours. This provides significant benefits to our maintenance program.
